On The Brink – Lord, Hear Our Prayers

by Marcus October 3, 2012
written by Marcus

I will strive to trust Him completely, to acknowledge His authority and to surrender to His will.

If all you remember from this post is the above, I will have accomplished much.

Recently, I ventured into the lighthearted to write about my encounter with God (which was seriously true) as well as a weekend escape with a friend who is the poster child of anti-culinarians. Both posts made me laugh. However, for whatever reason, not many folks read them. In contrast, sandwiching these two posts, my reflections about crashes, intelligent design and abortion were very well received.

Therefore, I have a theory. Generally, my opinions are supported by data but since it’s early morning, I’m going to incorporate the Blink methodology––the rapid cognition that happens within seconds, the power of thinking without thinking. In other words, I’m winging it.

I think America is grumpy and may not be in the mood to laugh.

The Crash – Divine Providence?

by Marcus October 1, 2012
written by Marcus

In 2003, the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting was awarded to Alan Miller and Kevin Sack of the Los Angeles Times for their revelatory and moving examination of the AV8 Harrier, nicknamed “The Widow Maker,” that was linked to the deaths of 45 pilots. Some of the men killed were my squadron mates and close friends. I think about them often. I honor their sacrifice with the following story.
AV8s Afghanistan - The Crash

After I finished Naval flight training and received my wings, I headed for Cherry Point, North Carolina. Since I had finished at the top of my class, I had been selected for the AV8 Harrier and the jet’s six-month training program was based there. I was both nervous and excited, as the Harrier was the premier Marine Corps fighter jet.

I was also honored in that the pilots selected for the program were generally steely-eyed veterans, the best in the Corps. However, until my tenure, the jet was considered too dangerous for new guys. The axiom among established Harrier pilots was it took a year before one could fly the jet without being scared spitless.

If I remember correctly, my training class consisted of seven pilots: four experienced ones transitioning from other fleet jets and three nuggets recently out of flight school. It was a good group of men. Yet barely two months later three of us had crashed, presumably due to pilot error in all cases. One of us was dead, another’s career was ruined and the third had to wait weeks under the pall of screw-up until he was cleared of any missteps. I was that third.

My Encounter With God

by Marcus September 28, 2012
written by Marcus

Invariably, before reading the various news sites in the morning, I first scan the Drudge Report. Generally, the headlines are not toasty fuzzy to say the least. Yesterday, for instance. Murder – suicide – animal cruelty – Iran being Iran, that’s bad – Israel being Israel, not good but understandable – GDP and durable orders in free fall – politicians tap dancing on semantics – social unrest in socialized Europe – and even a drunken horseman leading police on a slow-speed chase, which is sort of funny in contrast.

Moses - My Encounter With God

The quick perusal of world events only revs up my angst. I begin to redline however, when a usual preoccupation, of late, comes to mind––my life in quasi-crisis. Quasi in that it appears so but it’s not really.

You see, I’m a follower of Jesus Christ and that is earth-shattering fantastic. The fact that personal and professional fronts are not rosy, this too shall pass––I hope.

Therein my problem. Trusting and accepting God’s will, from my perspective, is like bungee jumping. Screaming towards the third planet from the sun at Mach 12 and this rubber band is going to save me!?

Intelligent Design – Utterly Brilliant

by Marcus September 23, 2012
written by Marcus

Many years ago, Lisa Miller––Newsweek magazine’s religion editor––wrote an interesting piece titled “Let’s Talk About God.” A new book redefining the faith debate had inspired her article. Her introduction began as follows:

“The atheist writers Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens have presented us with a choice: either you don’t believe in God or you’re a dope.” She went on to write: “Their brilliance, wit and (general) good humor have made the new generation of atheists celebrities among people who like to consider themselves smart. We enjoy their books and their telegenic bombast so much that we don’t mind their low opinion of us. Dopey or not, 90 percent of Americans continue to say they believe in God.”

Early Universe
She continued. “This iteration of the faith-versus-reason debate has gone on for years, with no real resolution. Yet despite the proliferation of viewpoints, I’m guessing few readers have ever closed one of these volumes and honestly declared themselves changed.”

God, I Love To Laugh

by Marcus September 18, 2012
written by Marcus

My blood pressure dreams of quiet days when everything is good. But alas, it only takes one brief lap around the Internet track chewing on the news before my blood pressure starts pounding my temple drums with a battering ram. Compound that with my professional and personal life, which are, at the moment, wanting, and one soon starts exploring the options of drinking at 10 a.m. or escaping to Ambienland.

Laugh Cry FreeDigitalPhotos

So I force myself to smile and think about the amazing therapeutic effects of laughter and friendship. All of a sudden, bad things don’t seem quite so bad.

Are joy and humor pearls of grace hand delivered by God?

A Doctor of the Church, St. Thomas Aquinas, writes the following in Summa Theologica: “Just as tears or groans are an effect of sorrow, so laughter is an effect of joy.” And the source of that joy? God!

Fr. James Martin’s book Laughing with the Saints told the following story. In the 1940s, when Blessed Pope John XXIII was still a cardinal and the papal nuncio in Paris, he was at an elegant dinner party, seated across from a woman wearing a very low-cut dress that exposed a good deal of cleavage. Someone turned to him and said, “Your Eminence, aren’t you embarrassed that everyone is looking at that woman?” And he said, “Oh no, everyone is looking at me, to see if I’m looking at her.”

Abortion – Perverse Insanity

by Marcus September 17, 2012
written by Marcus

I can be irreverent, a bit of an iconoclast and somewhat unconventional. Sometimes, that gets me in trouble. For example, soon I’m going to post about suicide––but my approach is going to surprise people. Why? Because I plan to be poignant, instructive and funny.
Hangman
“You think suicide is funny!?”

I can hear indignant voices blend into a deafening chorus––but no, definitely not funny in that sense. However, as fodder for dark humor––suicide can be hilarious. Especially if one’s approach is to cut through the Gordian knot of self-destruction with macabre, direct tactics.

Of course, morbid, unpleasant and (possibly) offensive yarns have their detractors but handled the right way, the absurdity can be instructive. At least that’s my point of view from the cheap seats.
But what if suicide had affected my life in some way? Then the hell with it, better that I pray for clarity than listen to some knucklehead muse on self-murder.

I feel that way about abortion. There’s nothing funny about it. It’s reprehensible from every angle. And Satan is overjoyed.
Please allow me to share.

“Hi Honey. It’s your dad. Just checking in––call me when you have a chance. Love you.”

Her name might be Grace. His name might be Matthew. Both would be college age and they would be extraordinary in untold ways. I can see them now, the familiar family characteristics from head to toe, their grandmother’s beautiful smile, perhaps their grandfather’s nose. Earnest, happy, funny; young people with character, heart and spirit. And promise. Unbelievable promise.

A Moment In Time – Service, Sacrifice, Honor

by Marcus September 13, 2012
written by Marcus

U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, information management officer Sean Smith and security personnel Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were murdered in Libya this week. They died in the service of their country.
Cimitero Americano dei Falciani (Firenze)
The tragedy of this virulent Islamic hatred is that wives will live on without husbands, children will grow up without fathers and unfulfilled promise will be buried. All the while, careers of responsible political cowards are barely bruised.

The sacrifice of these men, like so many others, is the lifeblood of this nation. I honor their memory – noble patriots who gave their lives knowing the risks.

I’d like to tell you of another such patriot.

Arrogance and Presidents – Enough

by Marcus September 12, 2012
written by Marcus

I know arrogance. As a former Marine fighter pilot, I used to think I was the chosen one. Fearless and indestructible, I never imagined making a mistake. After transitioning to the business world, this mindset continued as I worked with the best and the brightest––always feeling right at home with my “peers.”

I was special. Clearly.

Arrogance-W

As events unfolded through the years, and as mistakes compounded, I learned that I wasn’t so special. Not even close.

Therefore, I have to ask. Once again we’re about to elect a President. Regarding the two candidates, is arrogance a character trait that demands scrutiny?

Leaving Romney for another day, I’ll focus on President Obama. Is he arrogant and is that necessarily a bad thing? As well, does he believe himself smart enough and knowledgeable enough to solve the problems of America?

Three definitions are in order. Pride from the secular perspective is a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements. Arrogance is unwarranted pride, having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one’s own importance or abilities. Finally, Catholic Catechetical pride is one of the seven capital sins. This pride is undue self–esteem or self–love, which seeks attention and honor and sets oneself in competition with God.

Hating God

by Marcus September 10, 2012
written by Marcus

The Democratic convention ended last week and it appears that the Dems have a problem with God.

James Tissot The Scourging Of The Back

“Mr. God, excuse me. We’d like you to leave––now. Please pick up your things and these nice gentlemen will be escorting you out.”

So, the idea of eighty-sixing God is bad enough but if that’s a long-term strategy, that seems rather, well, short-sighted.

I’m not about to psychoanalyze groupthink because I’m not a social scientist but I can certainly empathize with some of the individuals who wanted to kick God out of the arena. At one time, I belonged to their tribe.

Not so very long ago, I was driving home from work and as if a switch was flipped, I pulled over to the side of the road, distraught, and rested my head on the steering wheel––I was a wreck and I knew it. Supposedly, I was on top of the world with an overflowing life, but as I eventually discovered, the fullness of my life was attributable to the wrong priorities. I was chasing the same things as everybody else: materialism, pleasure, self-indulgence, egoism, and on and on. How unoriginal. And so empty.

How In God’s Name Did You Become Catholic? I Fell To Grace – Part 3 of 3

by Marcus September 8, 2012
written by Marcus

At the end of Part Two, I had listed a sampling of man-made religions and their prime architect. The differences and sometimes divisiveness of these faith and belief systems––and yes, Catholicism is fairly turbulent at the moment––is a hallmark of the human condition and at times, has spurred trouble on the world stage, especially when religion is co-opted by intolerance. That simple statement has been the impetus for books that fill libraries.

Calvary

However, to my point on spiritual discovery, when I read some of the doctrines and interpretations attributable to these various religions or the like, and I emphasize some, at times I find them insular, problematic, sometimes cultish and occasionally nonsensical. Additionally, it could be said that many of the Christian schisms were attributable to pride and not charity, so the motivations for their dissent have to be seriously questioned.

About Me

I'm a proud American, a former USMC fighter pilot, currently a business executive, writer and observer of the world. Since shrinks are expensive and confession booths aren't open on command, I decided to blog instead. As I apply my unique lens to the world, it's edifying - at least for me - like removing bubbles from champagne for clarity.
